When Belt Replacement Is Necessary
Treadmill belts typically last 3-7 years depending on usage, but show these warning signs when replacement is
needed:
Replace Your Belt If:
Visible fraying or torn edges
Cracking on the underside (flip belt and check)
Stretching (won't maintain tension even when tightened)
Uneven wear creating lumps or waves
Surface delamination (top layer separating)
Persistent slipping even after tightening
Age exceeds 5 years with heavy use
Belt Types by Brand
Different brands use different belt specifications:
Life Fitness: 2-ply, often pre-lubricated, 3-4mm thick Technogym: Commercial-grade, 2-ply or 4-ply, pre
treated Matrix: Varies by model, typically 2-ply NordicTrack: Standard 2-ply, 2-3mm thick ProForm: 2-ply,
budget-friendly material Sole: Heavier duty, 2.5-3mm thick
Critical: Always order the exact belt for your model number. Belts are not universal.
DIY Belt Replacement Process
Difficulty Level: Intermediate Time Required: 60-90 minutes Helper Required: Yes (makes it much easier)
Tools Needed:
Allen wrench set
Socket wrench set
Screwdriver set
Vacuum cleaner
Cleaning supplies New belt (model-specific)
Treadmill lubricant
Step-by-Step Instructions:
STEP 1: Order Correct Belt Find your treadmill's model number (usually on a sticker near the motor or under
the console). Order the exact replacement belt from the manufacturer or authorized dealer.
STEP 2: Prepare the Area Unplug the treadmill completely. Remove the motor cover and any side panels for
better access.
STEP 3: Completely Loosen Rear Roller Remove the rear roller adjustment bolts completely (not just
loosening). Push the rear roller as far forward as possible to create maximum slack.
STEP 4: Remove Old Belt Slide the old belt off the rear roller first, then walk it off the front roller. Remove it
from the deck entirely.
STEP 5: Clean Everything This is your opportunity for deep cleaning:
Vacuum the deck surface thoroughly
Wipe the deck with a damp cloth
Clean the roller surfaces
Remove dust from the motor area
Let everything dry completely
STEP 6: Inspect the Deck Look for:
Wear patterns or grooves
Rough patches
Damage requiring repair
If damaged, consider flipping the deck (most are double-sided)
STEP 7: Install New Belt Center the new belt on the deck. Loop it around the front roller first (this is easier
than starting at the rear). Stretch it back and loop around the rear roller.
STEP 8: Tension the Belt Replace the rear roller bolts. Tighten evenly, a few turns at a time on each side. Aim
for 2-3 inches of lift at the center.
STEP 9: Align the Belt Follow the alignment procedure in Problem 4. Run the treadmill empty at 3-4 mph and
make small adjustments until perfectly centered.
STEP 10: Lubricate Apply treadmill lubricant as described in Problem 8. New belts need lubrication despite
being new.
